How to properly store finished candles

Candles are much more than a light source: they are decorative objects, fragrance carriers, and pieces of craftsmanship. Storing them well when extinguished extends their lifespan, maintains their appearance, and protects their fragrance. In this practical guide, you will find simple and sustainable steps to care for candles of various types, with recommendations aligned with Vento Barcelona's philosophy.

1. Pre-cleaning: prepare the candle before storing it

Why: removing dust, fingerprints, and wax residue prevents stains and maintains presentation.

How to do it:

  • Use a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth to clean the surface.
  • If there are dry wax remnants, gently heat with a hair dryer on low power and remove with a silicone spatula. Avoid sharp metal objects.
  • For glass candles, clean the exterior with warm water and neutral soap; dry well before storing.

2. Protect candles from dust and light

  • Store candles in boxes or fabric bags (unbleached cotton or linen) to prevent dust and dirt.
  • Avoid direct sunlight: UV rays can fade colors and degrade fragrances.
  • If the space is brightly lit, use opaque boxes or store candles on the lower shelves of cabinets.

3. Control temperature and humidity

  • Ideal temperature: cool and stable (approx. 15–22 °C). Avoid sudden changes that can crack the wax or deform pieces.
  • Humidity: maintain moderate levels. In humid places, add silica gel packets to prevent damage to labels and packaging.
  • Do not store candles near heat sources (radiators, ovens) or in spaces with extreme temperatures (garage, uninsulated attic).

4. Storage according to candle type

Container candles:

  • Keep the lid on if present; this helps preserve the aroma.
  • Place them upright with space to avoid knocks.

Pillar and sculptural candles:

  • Wrap in tissue paper or soft cloth to protect the shape.
  • Use a rigid support inside the box to prevent deformation during transport or storage.

Tealights and small candles:

  • Store them in trays or boxes with dividers to prevent them from rubbing against each other.

5. Label and rotate your stock

  • Label boxes with the scent name and purchase date. Scented candles maintain their best intensity for 12 to 18 months if stored correctly.
  • Follow the FIFO rule (first in, first out): use older candles first so they don't lose their fragrance.

6. How to preserve the aroma

  • Keep candles in closed containers when not in use.
  • Avoid placing them near strong-smelling substances (cleaning products, spices) that could impregnate the wax.
  • If you notice a loss of aroma, a brief and controlled lighting in a closed room can reactivate the fragrance, but do not make this a routine.

7. Safety and preventive maintenance

  • Check the condition of the wick before lighting: if it is dirty or frayed, trim it to 4–5 mm.
  • Do not store candles next to flammable materials or in places accessible to children or pets.
  • If you observe irregular discoloration, deep cracks, or strange exudates in the wax, dispose of the candle responsibly.

8. Reuse and recycle

  • Glass containers can be cleaned and reused as glasses, planters, or to make new candles.
  • Save compatible wax scraps for DIY projects: mix pieces from the same scent family to create small emergency candles.
  • Check local recycling points for packaging and labels.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Storing candles in airtight plastic at high temperatures (can cause condensation and stains).
  • Stacking candles without protection (causes deformation and scratches).
  • Exposing scented candles to intense odor sources that alter their fragrance.

Conclusion

With simple care — pre-cleaning, protection from dust and light, stable temperature, and labeling — your candles will retain their beauty, aroma, and safety for longer. These are small routines that reduce waste and respect the sustainable approach that inspires us.
