Care and Maintenance of Silicone Molds for Decorative Candles

May 21, 2025Vento Barcelona

The creation of decorative candles is an art that combines aesthetics, technique, and sensibility. But behind every perfect shape, every sharp texture, or elegant finish, lie discreet and fundamental tools: silicone molds. Taking care of them is not only essential to guarantee impeccable results but also to protect a valuable investment that can accompany us for years. In this article, we guide you through the keys to keeping your molds in perfect condition, extending their lifespan, and continuing to create unique pieces with the same precision as on day one.

A noble but demanding material

Silicone molds are preferred in the world of artisanal candlemaking for their flexibility, heat resistance, and ability to faithfully reproduce the most subtle details. However, their durability is directly linked to the care they receive. Unlike rigid industrial molds, silicone molds require more delicate and conscious treatment, as if they were a piece of jewelry.

Preventing deterioration begins by understanding their limits. One of the most common mistakes is exposing them to extreme temperatures or direct heat sources, such as heat guns used to smooth the surface of freshly demolded candles. Although technical silicone can withstand high temperatures, the occasional use of direct heat can deform the mold walls, break fine edges, or create imperceptible cracks that damage the finishes.

Effective and respectful cleaning

After each use, careful cleaning is essential. While the most intuitive method is to wash them with warm water and neutral soap, this process must include extraordinarily meticulous drying. Residual moisture in a mold can ruin the next pour, generating bubbles, imperfections, or even reactions between the hot wax and trapped water.

A particularly effective technique for cleaning adhered wax residue is to immerse the mold for a few minutes in a gentle bain-marie. The wax slowly melts and rises to the water's surface, separating from the silicone without the need for scrubbing. This method is not only delicate but also maintains the integrity of the mold, especially in the most complex details.

For quick or spot cleaning, isopropyl alcohol can be used, which dissolves wax residue without leaving moisture. Simply apply a small amount with a soft cloth or cotton swab and let it air dry for a few seconds. This technique is ideal, for example, after unmolding candles with intense pigments or essences that may leave residue.

Prevention: the best care

Beyond cleaning, the real key to extending the life of your molds is to prevent them from getting dirty or deforming. A good habit is to store them immediately after use, in closed boxes that protect them from dust, direct light, and accidental bumps. It is important not to stack them or leave them resting in a way that compromises their shape: every ripple or pressure will translate into a visible imperfection on the candle.

When demolding, it is advisable to do so gently, without pulling at the corners or excessively bending the mold. If necessary, you can press with your fingers from the base or use a little warm wax around the edges to facilitate the process. It is also recommended to check that no dry wax fragments remain inside the mold, as these adhere easily and can damage future pours.

A long-term investment

Investing in quality molds is not only a matter of aesthetic results but also of sustainability. A good mold can last for hundreds of uses if cared for properly. This not only reduces waste but also allows each candle to maintain the aesthetic language of the collection it belongs to, with clean lines and recognizable shapes.

In this sense, caring for molds is part of the artisanal candlemaking ritual. An everyday gesture that connects with the philosophy of handmade, of respect for materials, and the intention behind each object. Because deep down, a candle is not just scented wax and a wick, but also the entire process that precedes it: the design choice, mold preparation, careful pouring, patient waiting.

Learning from experience

At Vento Barcelona, we understand that caring for molds is also caring for the creative experience. That's why, in our decorative candle workshops, we teach not only how to design and pour but also how to maintain your tools in optimal condition. We use over 100 models of silicone molds, all designed in our studio and tested to offer professional results even to those new to this world.

During the workshop, in addition to exploring multi-layer pouring and natural pigmentation techniques, we share practical recommendations for cleaning, storage, and proper treatment of each mold. It is a unique opportunity to discover the artisanal process from within, connect with other candle enthusiasts, and take home not only a unique piece but also the knowledge to continue creating with confidence.

If you want to delve into this sensory universe and learn with us, we invite you to participate in our Decorative Candle Workshop, an intimate and creative experience that awakens the senses and honors the beauty of handmade.
