However, their durability is directly linked to the care they receive. Unlike rigid industrial molds, silicone molds require more delicate and conscious treatment, as if they were a piece of jewelry.
Preventing deterioration begins by understanding their limits. One of the most common mistakes is exposing them to extreme temperatures or direct heat sources, such as heat guns used to smooth the surface of freshly demolded candles. Although technical silicone can withstand high temperatures, the occasional use of direct heat can deform the mold walls, break fine edges, or create imperceptible cracks that damage the finishes.
Effective and respectful cleaning
After each use, careful cleaning is essential. While the most intuitive method is to wash them with warm water and neutral soap, this process must include extraordinarily meticulous drying. Residual moisture in a mold can ruin the next pour, generating bubbles, imperfections, or even reactions between the hot wax and trapped water.
A particularly effective technique for cleaning adhered wax residue is to immerse the mold for a few minutes in a gentle bain-marie. The wax slowly melts and rises to the water's surface, separating from the silicone without the need for scrubbing. This method is not only delicate but also maintains the integrity of the mold, especially in the most complex details.
For quick or spot cleaning, isopropyl alcohol can be used, which dissolves wax residue without leaving moisture. Simply apply a small amount with a soft cloth or cotton swab and let it air dry for a few seconds. This technique is ideal, for example, after unmolding candles with intense pigments or essences that may leave residue.
Prevention: the best care
Beyond cleaning, the real key to extending the life of your molds is to prevent them from getting dirty or deforming. A good habit is to store them immediately after use, in closed boxes that protect them from dust, direct light, and accidental bumps. It is important not to stack them or leave them resting in a way that compromises their shape: every ripple or pressure will translate into a visible imperfection on the candle.
When demolding, it is advisable to do so gently, without pulling at the corners or excessively bending the mold. If necessary, you can press with your fingers from the base or use a little warm wax around the edges to facilitate the process. It is also recommended to check that no dry wax fragments remain inside the mold, as these adhere easily and can damage future pours.
